Club History
St. Conleths was formed in 2002
when Peadar Duffy from Courtwood proposed that the three ladies clubs in
the Portarlington area – Courtwood, O’Dempseys and Portarlington should
join together. The name, St. Conleths, is taken from a hurling club that
was based in the area in the 1960s.
The
first club Chairperson was Pat Sweeney from Portarlington and the club
enjoyed immediate success. In 2002 the Under 12 team reached the final
of both the League and the Championship only to be beaten in both finals
by a strong Portlaoise team. In 2003 the ladies team won the
Intermediate Championship, beating Park/Ratheniska 1 – 8 to 0 – 10.
They went on to compete in the Leinster Club Championship, beating Bray
Emmetts but then losing narrowly to Killoe of Longford in the
semi-final.
The St.
Conleths team that won the 2003 Laois Intermediate Championship was:
Cassie
Dunne, Ann Lawlor, Sinead Murphy, Maria O'Reilly, Sandra Ramsbottom,
Tracey Fallon, Fionnuala Gleeson, Caitriona Murphy, Claire O'Connell
(0-4), Tracey Lawlor (1-1), Aisling Brophy (0-1), Deirdre Behan (0-2),
Lizzie Kehoe, Gemma Wilson, Catherine Territt, Alma Quigley, Lizzie
Emerson.
Unfortunately the club wasn’t ready yet for senior football and returned
to the Intermediate ranks. They reached the Intermediate Final again in
2006 but this time lost out to Portlaoise in O’Moore Pk.
At
underage level the club has contested a number of semi-finals and finals
but so far ultimate success has eluded us. The club is proud to have a
number of players who have worn the County jersey with distinction,
particularly in 2004 when four St. Conleths girls were on the Laois
Under 14 team that won the All-Ireland Blitz, and in 2006 when four of
our girls were on the Under 14 team that won the Leinster Championship
and went on to contest the All-Ireland semi-final.
